July 2014 / Research: Learning from Japan The Role of Rail Infrastructure in Urban Growth

Dongsei Kim conducted research on the relationship between High Speed Rail (HSR) and urbanization titled “Learning from Japan: The Role of Rail Infrastructure in Urban Growth” funded by William Kinne Fellows Traveling Prizes, Columbia University, GSAPP (2009). Collaboration work with Daniel Montes-Santamaria.

Dongsei traveled to Japan between July 4 and July 19, 2014 to conduct the research. He visited to Shinkansen (新幹線) stations and its surroundings in Tokyo, Ueno, Yokohama, Nagano, Takasaki, Omiya, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka (Shin-Osaka), Kobe (Shin-Kobe), Okayama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka (Hakata), Kokura, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima-Chuo.
