August 29, 2015 / Exhibition: REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015

Art Sonje Center, SEOUL, KOREA

Dongsei Kim was invited to participate in the REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015 exhibition curated by Keum Hyun Han, Nam-See Kim, Sunjung Kim, and Hyejin Lim at Art Sonje Center.

August 29 - November 29, 2015

Dongsei collaborated with artist Soyoung Chung to produce "Terminal: Far and Near"  installation for the REAL DMZ PROJECT 2015.

Work Description

Two different ‘terminals’ that make up a pair are installed at different locations in Dongsong, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do Province. These physically distanced ‘terminals’ look distinct from each other and play a different role. The ‘terminal’ located at Dongsong bus terminal is of a public gathering place where one can sit and wait for the buses. The other ‘terminal’ installed in the front yard of Cheorwon Catholic Church exists as an ephemeral private space to become a shadow and a silhouette of the other ‘terminal’. The order and the way in which the spectators will experience these two terminals won’t be the same. Thus the image of the two ‘terminals’ in spectators’ memories will be kept personal. The distanced experience of the two terminals attempts to measure the distances between people, distances between places, and distances between thoughts. Physical distances are often expanded into psychological distances that make some things come closer or distanced. The experience of the physical space, emotional and mental tensions that arise from these journeys explore the DMZ’s geopolitical context at the scale of a small town through human relationships. We pay our attention to these processes of individual memories and experiences. Further, when the two terminals are relocated from Dongsong to Seoul they are reshaped with new combination and installation method just as individual memories of places change over time.
